What is the sale of Chametz?
Since we are not allowed to have any Chametz in our possession on Passover, we must sell any Chametz that belongs to us and that we did not burn it.
All the Chametz that will not be eaten or burned before Passover must be collected, including Chametz vessels that have not been properly cleaned – and put them in a reserved place (closet, room, etc.).
The place must be locked or taped up when it is closed, since during the holiday it will belong to the gentile who will buy the Chametz. [It is not possible to use, eat or sell during Passover any Chametz that is sold to a gentile].
Selling Chametz includes many details, therefore only a qualified Rabbi can perform it. The Rabbi acts as your messenger, to sell the Chametz to the gentile on the day before Pesach, and also to buy it back from him at the end of the holiday.
* A sale can be made for additional people who have agreed to it, but a separate form must be filled out for each of them.
